Guided hike in the Mythen region from Zug, with three lift rides

The two Mythen above Schwyz can be seen from far away. This private tour takes the Rotenfluebahn up to 1,571 metres and continues on foot through the alpine pastures and rock bands at their feet. Around seven kilometres are walked, three lift rides are included, and the summit of the Grosser Mythen is not part of the route.

What to expect

From Zug, train and bus take you to Rickenbach above Schwyz. The Rotenfluebahn, a gondola opened in 2014, climbs a good 950 metres in around eleven minutes to the Rotenflue at 1,571 metres. The hike begins there. It leads across alpine pastures and past rock formations through the Mythen region, with views of the Grosser Mythen, which towers over everything at 1,898 metres, of Lake Lucerne and of the Schwyz basin. The guide stops for photos and tells you about the area.

Several mountain restaurants are available along the way, for instance on the Holzegg, the pass at 1,405 metres where the path with its 47 hairpin bends up the Grosser Mythen begins. The group does not take this summit path; the tour is designed as a moderate hike with some steep and uneven sections. At the end another lift brings the group back down to the valley.

Getting there and meeting point

The meeting point is the main concourse of Zug station in front of the Caffè Spettacolo. After booking, the guide can also arrange a nearby hotel as the meeting point. Travel from the meeting point is included, lunch is not.

Good to know

The tour calls for moderate fitness and a liking for uneven paths; a head for heights is not needed for the hike without the summit. The operator excludes people with limited mobility or low fitness. Bring hiking boots, weatherproof clothing, water and snacks. You receive a packing list after booking. In 2026 the Rotenfluebahn runs daily from 9 May to 25 October. In bad weather it runs in convoy, with longer waits.

The operator does not publish the exact route, adapting it to the participants. Alpine Explorers is a small Zug-based provider for English-speaking guests; the tour is new and has no reviews yet. Children and young people take part only when accompanied by adults.

Tip: The Mythen region is home to Switzerland's oldest game reserve. If you set out early, with a little luck you will see chamois on the slopes below the Grosser Mythen.
