What to expect

The journey goes by train past Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz to Arth-Goldau and on to Schwyz, then up by the Stoosbahn to the car-free village at around 1,300 metres. A short walk through the village brings the group to the chairlift up the Klingenstock. From there the path follows the ridge westwards, around 4.5 kilometres with about 350 metres each of ascent and descent, in places hewn into the rock and secured with chains. Along the way the guide tells you about the steep slopes where wild hay is still made by hand in summer.

The final climb to the Fronalpstock is short and steep. At the top the highest restaurant in the Canton of Schwyz awaits, with views over Lake Lucerne. Back to the village it is by chairlift or, if you prefer, on foot with the guide. The group returns to Lucerne by the Stoosbahn and train.

Getting there and meeting point

If you are staying in Lucerne, you are collected from your hotel at 7.45 am. Everyone else meets the guide at the same time at the Torbogen archway in front of the main entrance to Lucerne station. All travel in second class is included, lunch is not.

Good to know

The ridge trail is a T3 mountain hiking trail. The operator excludes people with a fear of heights, vertigo or low fitness and recommends a minimum age of 14. The hike takes place only in good weather without strong wind; otherwise the guide offers a different hike on the day. The chairlift to the Klingenstock runs depending on the weather, in 2026 daily until 11 October.

Bring shoes with a good grip, ideally ankle-high, a refillable water bottle, snacks, sun cream and a hat. The operator is based in Lucerne and also runs multi-day rail journeys. The tour is new and has no reviews yet.

Tip: The ridge is quietest in the morning. Because the group starts early, you are at the top before the day visitors arrive from the valley.
