What to expect
From Zug you travel with the guide to Schwyz and take the Stoosbahn, the world's steepest funicular, up to the car-free mountain village of Stoos. A short walk through the village leads to the chairlift up the Klingenstock. The ridge begins there: around 4.5 kilometres to the Fronalpstock, with about 350 metres each of ascent and descent. In places the path is hewn into the rock and secured with chains. To the left the view drops almost sheer to Lake Lucerne, to the right into the Muotatal, and on the horizon stand the peaks of Uri and Glarus.
On the Fronalpstock there is time for the viewing platform and a rest at the mountain restaurant or with your own picnic. Two chairlifts take you back to the village, from where the Stoosbahn runs down to the valley and you return to Zug. All travel is included; the guide buys the tickets.
Getting there and meeting point
The meeting point is at 8.45 am in the main concourse of Zug station by the Caffè Spettacolo. By arrangement the guide will also collect you in Lucerne, Arth-Goldau or Schwyz. Travel is by public transport in second class.
Good to know
The ridge trail is graded as a T3 mountain hiking trail. A sure step, a head for heights and good fitness are needed, along with hiking boots with a good grip. The operator requires your own accident and travel insurance covering mountain hiking up to 2,000 metres. In unsuitable weather it offers a lower-level hike, another date or a refund. The chairlift to the Klingenstock runs only in fine weather, in 2026 daily from 13 June to 11 October and then at weekends until 1 November.
Alpine Explorers is a small Zug-based provider that organises private hikes for English-speaking guests. The tour is new and has no reviews yet. Children and young people take part only when accompanied by adults; the ridge suits young people with mountain experience.
Tip: Bring hiking poles. The final climb to the Fronalpstock is the steepest section, and in the afternoon the light comes from the west and makes the lake shine.
