The Grosser Mythen

Practical tips for a safe summit tour

Cover image for the story «The Grosser Mythen»

Its outline shapes the landscape like hardly any other mountain in Schwyz. The Grosser Mythen, that striking rock pyramid rising into the sky above Schwyz, exerts a magnetic pull. Year after year thousands make the pilgrimage to the top, drawn by a panorama that ranks among the most spectacular in the Pre-Alps.

Yet behind the fascination lies a sombre reality: the Grosser Mythen tops the sad statistics of Switzerland's deadliest hiking routes. What makes this mountain so popular is also its undoing.

An underestimated challenge

The misconception begins at the Holzegg. Only 1.8 kilometres separate the mountain inn from the summit, a distance that sounds harmless. But this seemingly short stretch has a sting in it: 530 metres of ascent, steep throughout, studded with rock steps and 47 hairpin bends. The path winds its way up the mountain, narrow and exposed.

The danger lies in playing it down. Too many people underestimate what this mountain demands of them. Anyone who wants to reach the summit safely and, above all, get back down safely should stick to a few tried and tested ground rules.

Planning is everything

The Grosser Mythen is no Sunday stroll. Even experienced mountain walkers need an hour and a half to two hours for the climb from the Holzegg. Start early, not only because of the midday heat but also to stay ahead of thunderstorms. An often underestimated factor: the descent takes longer than you think. Tired legs move more slowly, and that is exactly when mistakes happen.

Equipment makes the difference

Trainers have no place on the Grosser Mythen. Sturdy mountain boots with a grippy tread are essential; on smooth rock slabs the choice of footwear can decide between a firm foothold and a fall. Just as important: enough water and food. The demanding climb takes a lot out of the body.

A weather check is a must

Check the weather before you start and again on the way. In the wet the path turns into a slide. In spring and autumn snowfields can block the upper section of the path. Then there is only one answer: turn back. The mountain is not going anywhere.

Consideration and discipline

On sunny weekends the narrow path is at full stretch. Patience is called for: let others pass at suitable spots, keep your distance from the drop on exposed passages and always walk on the uphill side. Do not leave the marked path, not even for the perfect photo. No selfie is worth risking your life for.

Stay sober

Reaching the summit deserves a celebration, but in moderation. Alcohol at altitude impairs judgement and sure-footedness, both of which you urgently need for the demanding descent. Save the toast for a safe arrival in the valley.

The reward belongs to the careful

The Grosser Mythen shares its beauty only with those who approach it with preparation and respect. Follow these rules and you will be rewarded not only with a breathtaking panorama but, above all, with the most valuable experience of all: a safe return to the valley and the anticipation of the next summit.
