The best time to visit Central Switzerland: a month-by-month season guide

Lakeside promenade with benches and trees on Lake Lucerne, behind it wooded slopes

There is really no wrong month for Central Switzerland; depending on the season the region simply offers something different. Here you can read what the individual months around Lake Lucerne and in the Schwyz mountains actually have to offer, from the season for ridge walks to the days with a sea of fog. That way you can plan your trip according to your own wishes instead of following a general «best time to travel».

The four seasons in one paragraph each

Summer (mid-June to September) is the time when everything is running. All the lifts operate, the ridge on the Stoos is open, cattle graze on the alps and the inns are busy. July and August bring the warmest lake and the biggest crowds. In June and September you experience the same mountains with far more room.

Autumn (October to mid-November) is valued above all by people who already know the region. The air is clear, the larches turn golden and fewer and fewer guests are about. That lasts until the lifts go into maintenance and the first seas of fog form.

Winter (December to March) often brings a clear boundary at around 1000 metres: below it stays grey, above the sun shines. You can ski on the Stoos and at Hoch-Ybrig, walk the winter trails on the Rigi or join an underground expedition in the Hölloch.

Spring (April to mid-June) calls for some flexibility. The valleys are green, snow still lies on the heights and the waterfalls carry plenty of water. Some lifts are in maintenance at this time. In return these are the quietest and cheapest months, even though the weather is then least predictable.

Month by month

January is the high season of the sea of fog. On days with an inversion, the Rigi lies in the sun above a closed white blanket of cloud, as described in the article The Rigi in winter. On the Stoos the ski season is in full swing; more on that in the article Stoos in winter. In Schwyz the carnival begins to stir.

February brings reliable snow, ski weeks for families and the coldest nights of the year. How cold it can get is shown in the article Glattalp: the coldest place in Switzerland and how to visit it. Carnival now reaches its peak. With its Schwyz mask tradition the region shows its most exuberant side in these days.

March is the time for spring skiing on the sunny terraces, while down in the valley the paths open again. Watch out for the first maintenance breaks of the lifts, for instance on the cable car at Weggis. The current dates are on the official pages of the railways.

April lies between the seasons. While the heights are still white, the month suits walks by the lake, museums and Einsiedeln, as well as the Rütli and the other historical places in fresh green. More about the Rütli in the article The Rütli meadow. Prices are now at their lowest and there are as few guests about as at hardly any other time of year.

May brings the first strong green to the valleys and the waterfalls carry the most water. The path and hut on the Grosser Mythen usually open in the middle of the month; details in the article Grosser Mythen. Old snow still lies on the high-level routes. On the Stoos the Fronalpstock side is accessible before the ridge opens.

June is the beginning of summer. In mid-June the ridge season starts on the Stoos; more on that in the article Season and lift times for the Stoos ridge hike. The alpine flowers are in full bloom and it stays light late into the evening. At the start of June much is already accessible as in summer, yet the paths are as quiet as in spring.

July is high season everywhere. It is at its warmest, you can swim in the lake, festivals are held on the alps and the lifts run longest. At the well-known viewpoints, however, there is also the most going on, so set out early in the day. Visitors do spread out better in this region than, say, in the Jungfrau area. All the same, on a fine Saturday around midday the Stoos ridge is busy.

August resembles July, with the national holiday added. On 1 August bonfires burn on the summits, a cross of fire glows on the Grosser Mythen and there are celebrations on the Rütli, the site of the founding story. At weekends there are also Schwingen festivals; more on those in the article Experiencing Schwingen.

September is especially popular with locals. Typical are stable high-pressure spells with clear long-distance views, the lake is still warm, the paths are pleasantly cool and all the lifts are still running. At the same time the crowds thin out. Anyone free to choose their travel dates is therefore best advised to come in September.

October is the month of golden autumn. The larches glow yellow and the Urnersee shows itself in warm colours. In the middle of the month the ridge season on the Stoos ends. In the second half of the month the first inversions form. Autumn walks above the fog are less well known than the summer tours, but very rewarding.

November is the quietest month. Many lifts are in maintenance and the mountain restaurants take a break. In return the days with a sea of fog now really begin. Museums and Einsiedeln are also worth a visit at this time. In the Hölloch the expedition season begins, because the deep parts of the cave are safest when the surface is frozen. More on that in the article Hölloch: inside one of Europe's largest cave systems.

December in Einsiedeln is marked by Advent, which transforms the square in front of the abbey facade. More on that in the article Einsiedeln in winter. The ski areas open during the month. The year ends with quiet, lantern-lit evenings in the car-free village on the Stoos.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for Lake Lucerne? September suits best, because stable weather, open lifts and a warm lake come together while the crowds are already thinning. June follows close behind.

Is Central Switzerland worthwhile in winter? Yes. The trains up the Rigi run all year, you can ski on the Stoos, and winter walking trails and the days with a sea of fog come on top. The region is therefore as worth a trip in winter as in summer.

When is the Stoos ridge walk open? The ridge walk is possible from mid-June to mid-October, in line with the operation of the lifts. More detail in the article Season and lift times for the Stoos ridge hike.

When does it rain most? Early summer brings the most showers. They are often short and usually fall in the afternoon. The driest weather comes most reliably in autumn, when high-pressure spells set in.

Is November a bad time? For outings with the mountain railways largely yes, because many of them are in maintenance. For museums, Einsiedeln, days with a sea of fog and expeditions in the Hölloch, on the other hand, November is a very good time. And few guests are about then.
