The Rigi in winter: sledging, winter walking and sun above the sea of fog

Many locals like the Rigi best in winter. In central Switzerland it is the classic destination for escaping the fog. Every winter the Mittelland lies for weeks under a grey blanket of high fog at 800 to 1,200 metres. The Rigi stands free and is just high enough to rise out of that layer into the sun. You ride up through the grey until the train leaves the cloud cover behind and below you lies a white sea out of which the Alpine peaks protrude. At the latest then you understand why generations of people from Lucerne and Zurich head up the Rigi for a day again and again in winter. What is on offer fits, too: the cogwheel railways run on every day of the year, and the Rigi prepares 35 km of winter walking trails and several sledge runs. An overview of the whole mountain is given in post Rigi: The Guide to the Queen of the Mountains.

The sea of fog: how to experience it

To see the sea of fog you need a high-pressure inversion, that is calm, dry weather with high fog over the Mittelland. On such days this is the best approach:

  1. In the morning, look at the webcams on Rigi Kulm. If the summit cameras show sun and those in the valley show grey, set off straight away.
  2. Our altitude-corrected forecasts show at what height the fog layer lies. You will find them on the weather page for Rigi Kulm.
  3. Ride up from Arth-Goldau or Vitznau. The moment when the train breaks through the cloud cover is impressive in itself.
  4. At Kulm the panorama then looks like an island world. Pilatus, the Mythen and the high Alps rise out of the white like islands out of the sea.

Inversion days are most frequent from November to January. Precisely in the weeks when it is gloomiest in the lowlands, the Rigi often shows its finest side. Which season is worthwhile in the region is discussed in post The best time to visit Central Switzerland.

Winter walking: 35 km of prepared trails

Because the Rigi is gently shaped, it lends itself very well to winter walking. These routes are particularly popular:

  • Panorama trail Kaltbad → Scheidegg: the level old railway trackbed is rolled all winter. For two hours you have the Alps and often the sea of fog in view, and the path can be walked in ordinary shoes. More on the route in post Hikes on the Rigi.
  • Summit circuit at Kulm: short, with a magnificent view and reachable straight from the train.
  • Descent Kulm → Kaltbad: the broad hour downhill with the lake or the sea of fog in front of you ends at the mineral baths, so a winter walk and a warm bath combine well. More about the baths: Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad.

The trails are prepared, but they remain winter paths. Wear footwear with good grip and take spikes along after mild spells. Remember sun protection too, because above the sea of fog the sun reaches you twice, directly from above and reflected from the white below.

Sledging

Families from Lucerne have been out on the Rigi's sledge runs for a long time. Sledges can be hired at the top stations. You ride up by train and railway and come down on generous descents. Many locals spend a winter day here like this: winter walking in the morning, sledging in the afternoon and finally a hot chocolate on a terrace at Kulm or in Kaltbad. That sequence has a long tradition on the Rigi.

Practicalities for winter

  • Getting there: the cogwheel railways from Vitznau and Arth-Goldau run daily and all year round. The Weggis cable car closes for maintenance in spring and late autumn. All the ways up the mountain: Getting to the Rigi.
  • Tickets: the same tickets apply as in summer. With a Swiss Travel Pass or GA everything is free, which makes the Rigi an inexpensive destination for pass holders in winter too. More on the passes: Swiss Travel Pass, GA and half-fare card in the Schwyz region.
  • Boat: the scheduled boat Lucerne–Vitznau runs less often in winter, so check the times in advance. The trip out through the fog has an atmosphere all of its own.
  • Food and drink: the mountain restaurants at Kulm, in Kaltbad and at Scheidegg are open all winter. On inversion days the sunny terrace seats are much in demand, so come outside peak times if you can.
