Winter sports in the Canton of Schwyz

In winter the Canton of Schwyz offers a broad spectrum of possibilities, for skiers, cross-country skiers, snowshoers and anyone who simply wants to spend an active day in the mountain landscape. The offerings are as varied as the landscape itself, from steep pistes and groomed trails to quiet winter walking paths and long toboggan runs.

Stoos: world record and winter stillness in one

Since 2017 the Stoos ski area has been reachable in a way that is unique in the world: the steepest funicular railway on earth carries guests up to 1,300 metres, with cabins that rotate during the ride so that passengers always sit upright. The area has around 35 kilometres of pistes and is particularly suited to families and returners. The car-free village adds its own part to the atmosphere, a calm that has become rare.

Hoch-Ybrig: demanding pistes

In the furthest corner of the Wägital lies Hoch-Ybrig, a ski area with more than 60 kilometres of pistes spread across top stations between 1,050 and 1,900 metres. The gradients are considerable in places and the runs long. After fresh snowfall an early start pays off: away from the pistes there are always untouched slopes to be found. The restaurants favour the down-to-earth over event catering.

Sattel-Hochstuckli: fun in the snow without skis

Winter sports do not necessarily mean a ski piste. A modern gondola carries guests up to around 1,200 metres, from where a wide panorama opens from Lake Zurich to the Bernese Alps. The offering is aimed at snowshoers, winter walkers and anyone who wants to sledge down into the valley. On weekdays the area is pleasantly quiet.

Cross-country skiing in the Muotatal, Rothenthurm and Studen

The Muotatal offers well-kept cross-country trails, maintained with great commitment by local clubs, in a landscape that takes on a mood all its own, rougher, in winter. If you are looking for more kilometres of trail, you will find them in Rothenthurm and Studen. The protected Rothenthurm raised bog offers an extensive, flat trail landscape that is attractive for beginners too.

Sledging and winter walking

The toboggan run on Stoos is among the finest in central Switzerland, long enough to justify the climb and with views during the descent. If you would rather be on foot, there is a dense network of prepared winter walking paths around the Mythen with changing views and plenty of peace.

Ice sports and other offerings

Besides the snow, the canton has several ice rinks and skating areas, a welcome addition for families. Ice hockey also has an active base. Whether ski piste, cross-country trail, toboggan run or snowshoe route: in winter the Canton of Schwyz covers a broad spectrum, often closer than you think.
